Utilizing theater to deliver speech and social therapies to children and adults with special needs.
Ages 6-16
Saturday Class, 10am – 10:50am
This innovative program helps children with communication disorders and special needs improve their communication abilities through musical theatre. Fun, creative games and exercises help students learn to use their bodies and voices to convey emotion, using intelligible speech and varying pitch. The program is led by experienced musical theatre instructors and a special education teacher.
Each session culminates in a final performance for friends and family!

Broadway Connections was created in 2009 by CCTA and the Loyola University of Maryland’s Clinical Center to serve youth and teens ages 11-19 with disorders of social communication; including Down Syndrome, Autism, and Autism Spectrum disorders, among others. The goal of the program is to assist participants in furthering their social communication skills within the context of a musical theatre program, enlisting the support of specialists in speech pathology, special education, music, and theatre. Peer volunteers participate as fellow actors, modeling behaviors and interactions for participants. In 2010, Expanding Horizons joined forces with a third partner, the Howard County Public School System, working with special needs teens in the county’s high schools under a grant from the Horizon Foundation.
Broadway Connections is currently represented with a program at Glenelg High School, under the direction of Kassidy Sharp, Glenelg Drama teacher and CCTA Director.

Ages 16 & up
A young Adult theatre class for ages 16 & up with differing abilities. The class utilizes Occupational Therapy techniques and theatrical experiences to improve the student’s life skills in the areas of communication, socialization and self esteem while putting together musical performances. This is a free class provided to those in our area with differing abilities due to generous grants and help from Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church

Ages 16 & up
Virtual Horizons brings singing, dancing, and acting to your living room! This class is designed to encourage and promote social interaction through improv games, short scenes, sing-alongs, and dance! This is a non-recital/performance-based class. Through the performing arts, it focuses on having fun, socializing, and staying connected to others – all within a virtual environment!
